For a long time now, there has been several oppositions to Monsanto’s popular weed killer, Round up whose active ingredient is glyphosate over its potential risks to both human, animal and environmental health, claims that the manufacturer quickly dismisses as being false and non-scientific. This is even after the World Health Organization’s international agency for research on cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans”. So who should we trust? The manufacturer themselves or a third party investigator?
“But this strategy wasn’t going to last forever, time was just around the corner. As the Swahili saying goes; ‘siku za mwizi ni harubaini’ which literally translates to ‘A thief’s days are forty’ ~The OrganicGuy
According to them, the science is pretty clear that the weed killer is safe and since it has been in use for over 40 years. Which makes it fair for them to tell us which science they have been using and over this period of 40 years, how many petitions have they received from various people over the effects that round up and other glyphosate based products has had over them. Answers? The science is probably theirs (where, coincidentally their genetically modified seeds are systematically designed to withstand their blockbuster chemical, Roundup ready) and the fact that over this period, there are over 5,000 cases pending in court over the same.
But from the business point of view, I must give it up to them since they have mastered the art of playing safe and clearing their name from being called the bad guys. But this strategy wasn’t going to last forever, time was just around the corner. As the Swahili saying goes; ‘siku za mwizi ni harubaini’ which literally translates to ‘A thief’s days are forty’ (I don’t know how good of a translator I am). But while they might have not been stealing from us directly, they have certainly been cheating us.
Well, we all know the case of DeWayne Johnson, the former school groundskeeper who sued Monsanto over its product, round up which he claimed had given him cancer. Result? A court order requiring Monsanto to pay him a cool $289 million in damages for the weed killer giving him cancer. But do we really have to wait till things get this nasty or can we avoid such scenarios?

As an organic proponent, I don’t celebrate by the fact that Mr. Johnson was awarded the hefty fees coz probably to Monsanto, that was just a drop in the ocean in terms of money to them, but my main victory really comes from the point of view that their business ethics have been fully exposed. The ability for them NOT being able to tell us, users the truth about their product is the first failure of business and by the fact these guys Monsanto, since 1997 have filed about 145 lawsuits against farmers who have “improperly reused their patented seeds.” And haven’t lost a single case, Not one.
For me, the best part of the proceedings is when Mr. Johnson’s lawyer, Brent Wisner really hit the nail in the head by saying the fact that Monsanto scientists knew of the cancer risk posed by Roundup as far back as the 1970s, but failed to inform the public is a deliberate effort to distort the truth since the weed killer generated hefty returns. Through this, Monsanto made a choice not to put a cancer warning on the label, and that is a choice that shows their reckless disregard for human health.
Apparently, cancer is NOT the only effect that can result from the use of this herbicide. Various medical defects result from the ingestion or contact with this herbicide. They range from birth defects, kidney and liver failures, DNA damage, infertility, mineral depletions, endocrine disruptions, cerebral atrophy, heart cell toxicity and overall toxicity in human cells. This is just to name a few, the full list of damages done by the use and ingestion of Roundup is a very, very long one.

My major worry is for the conventional farmers who have been sold the idea that the use of herbicides is the only way out for them to engage in farming and the fact that the manufacturers themselves don’t want to inform them of the effects that come with them. Can you imagine how many of our farmers are ignorant of these fact? Can you imagine how many of them get sick, don’t know the cause of the disease and never suspect the use of herbicides? This is NOT to mention the reported 3 million cases of pesticide poisoning and 220,000 deaths a year as a result of farmers using them.
I celebrate the ruling of Mr. DeWayne Johnson as a channel that can be used to create the necessary awareness to the innocent farmer who still uses the round up product without any knowledge of its effect and furthermore NOT being told its effect by the manufacturer. Can the government do something to protect our farmers? Can legislations be made to require the manufacturer to clearly label the effects that are associated to the product? Can the government have legislations that can strongly support organic agro ecological practices that prevents the exposure of farmers to these kind of products? Only time will tell

I sure hope that the emotions that overcame Mr. Johnson as the verdict was being read was a sign of better decisions are going to be made and NO other person will undergo what he has had to. The earlier we do it, the better. Remember, Mr. Johnson was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (a cancer that is more prevalent in farm workers) only two and a half years into his job. The more we wait, the more our farmers are diagnosed with all sorts of diseases under our watch.
